For #tbt we are sharing one our Curator’s favorite pictures! • March 10 – 18, 1945 USS Iowa is shown departing Hunter’s Point Shipyard, San Francisco, CA, after completing repairs to her number 3 propeller shaft damaged during "Halsey's Typhon", and other systems, plus adding various improvements.  This was Iowa’s first major overhaul since leaving the East Coast in January, 1944.  Iowa’s 04 Level bridge area was enclosed and the 05 Level Fire Control exterior’s walkway was extended forward, around the armored conning tower.  New search and fire control radars were installed.  The 3 OS2U Kingfisher floatplanes carried on the aft 2 catapults were replaced with the new Curtiss SC-1 Seahawk floatplanes.  Iowa's Measure 32-1b paint scheme was replaced with the more common Measure 22, (a new purple 27 and gray 7, along with a reportedly neutral gray deck being painted). ⚓️ Image made available through the National Archives. ...

Flakturm VII G-Tower, now part of a huge public park in Vienna, was one of the last two flak towers constructed at the end of WWII between July 1944 and January 1945. It served as a gun tower but also as a shelter with room for 10,000 civilians and a hospital ward inside. Many of these are still around because they were so huge they were deemed impractical to demolish. It now has protection as a National Monument but it’s been slowly falling apart since 1946 when some kids lit ammunition on fire and damaged it from the inside. .

August 9th, 1945 - On this day in World War Two history, the atomic bomb 'Fat Man

August 9th, 1945 - On this day in World War Two history, the atomic bomb 'Fat Man" is dropped on Nagasaki by US B-29 Bock’s Car, flown by Maj. Charles Sweeney; about 35,000 killed. Also on this day, the Soviets invade Japanese-occupied Manchuria with 1.5 million soldiers. These two events would hit Hirohito, the Japanese emperor, hard. After the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th, Hirohito had been very stressed about how to proceed. Influenced by his generals and high command, he decided to continue fighting for honor and glory. The Japanese people had not suffered through all these years to lose now. Another reason as to why Hirohito decided to continue the war was because the Imperial Japanese Army had created vast home island defenses never before seen on any Japanese held island. These included new heavy tank models and other new weapons that would have resulted in mass US casualties (or so the Japanese thought). Because of all the hard work put into these defenses, Hirohito did not want to surrender before they were even used, so Japan fought on. Now, on August 9th, with another Japanese city decimated, and the Japanese held Manchuria invaded, Hirohito began to change his mind. Here we see a few (spot the others in the background) German Jagdpanther tank destroyers of Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung [which roughly translates to: Heavy Tank Hunter Division] 654. The Jagdpanther was a tank destroyer built on the Panther tank chassis and outfitted with the famous 8.8cm cannon. This massive tank weighed 45.5 tonnes (100,300 lbs)! And could reach speeds of up to 28.6mph (46 km/h) with its Maybach HL230 P30 V-12 690hp engine.

British troops at the Taq-e Bostan archeological site near the Iranian city of Kermanshah.

The Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran, also known as the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Persia, was the joint invasion of Iran in 1941 during the Second World War by the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union. The invasion lasted from August 25 to September 17, 1941 and was codenamed Operation Countenance. Its purpose was to secure Iranian oil fields and ensure Allied supply lines (see the Persian Corridor) for the USSR, fighting against Axis forces on the Eastern Front. Though Iran was neutral, the Allies considered Reza Shah to be friendly to Germany, deposed him during the subsequent occupation and replaced him with his young son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. ------------------------------------------------
