The Top 25 Roller Coasters I’ve Ridden: #6 Twisted Colossus (RMC I-Box Hybrid Coaster @sixflagsmagicmountain )
What makes it great: This Möbius loop hybrid has so many things going for it including length, pacing, airtime, and inversions. The ride has a great first drop that you get to do twice. While it’s a fairly direct RMC drop, it works at ejecting you both times. The off-axis turn as you ascend the turnaround on the blue side is a phenomenal moment that combines super strong sustained ejector with laterals. The wave turns on both the green and blue side some of the best on any RMC, because you enter them much more tightly and quickly, which results in great pull. The parking lot side of both the blue and green tracks are loaded with a variety of twisted and straight airtime moments. Twisted Colossus also has two great inversions. The zero-g roll has that perfect mix of hang time and whip that RMC knows how to find. The zero-g stall is my favorite zero-g moment on any coaster and is neck and neck with Tatsu’s pretzel loop and X2’s raven turns for best inversion I’ve ever experienced (is there any debate that Magic Mountain is the best park for inversions?). The continual horizontal movement while upside down and low to the ground creates one of the trippiest moments on any coaster, aka “the Matrix moment.” Why it’s not higher: I really think RMC did a phenomenal job with the layout. The rides in the top five just are more intense and/or have stronger airtime. (To be clear, Twisted Colossus has very strong airtime and is pretty intense, the rides above it are just a step above). Then, there’s the fact that it rarely duels. I think a dueling RMC was an awesome idea, but it’s just not practical with a ride type that is so particular to dispatch. The dueling really does add to the wave turn and the inversions, but honestly for me is “the cherry on top.” It doesn’t actually impact the ride’s ranking.
Preferred seat: It’s an RMC I-Box so back row for the airtime. #rollercoaster#sixflags#sixflagsmagicmountain ...

Twisted Colossus is a conversion of Colossus, a massive wooden coaster that opened in 1978. Built by International Amusement Devices, it was the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the world. Colossus quickly became a Hollywood icon due to the park’s LA-based location. The coaster was featured in iconic movies and shows such as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Wonder Woman, The A-Team, Step by Step, and Castle to name a few. It is also the namesake to a song by Tyler, the Creator.
Colossus would go through many modifications, but in 2014, it was announced to close forever. To celebrate the iconic ride, there was a 36-hour riding marathon.
It was shortly announced after that it would become Twisted Colossus, one of RMC’s conversions. Unlike its predecessor, Twisted Colossus is a Möbius coaster, meaning there is one continuous track, so therefore it is one credit. It was also the first coaster to feature a high five, a banking element towards the other train, and a top gun stall, an inverting element similar to a moment in the movie Top Gun.
During conversion, the top of the structure caught on fire, spawning different memes. No one was injured since the park was closed.
Twisted Colossus opened in 2015 to rave reviews. Many thought it was a worthy successor to Colossus and live the dueling aspect of it.
The coaster hasn’t been around long enough to be in Hollywood classics, but it was featured in Katy Perry’s Chained to the Rhythm music video.
