Lets talk about HEADACHES 🤕
There are many different types of headaches that will require different treatments. The headache we will be talking about today is called a cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headaches are due to a few things, tight muscles with trigger points, pain referral from cervical joint capsules, and mechanical dysfunction. The best way to address cervicogenic headaches is to address the mechanical dysfunction that the neck and upper/mid back experience. Lets break this down.
Did you know that approximately 30% of your neck movement is due to your thoracic spine? The upper & mid back is responsible for a lot of neck mobility and influences neck function. This area can often go on ignored because symptoms are not usually experienced in this area... but thats a BIG mistake. We have 3 exercises in this post that address thoracic mobility ➡️ thoracic cat-camels ➡️ & 2 types of thoracic rotation exercises.
Ever wonder why the muscles behind your neck end up tight? This is often due to an overload of the muscular tissue in forward head posture positions. The best way to give them relief is to focus on strengthening the muscles that do the opposite! ➡️ Chin Tucks will help to correct neck posture & decrease the activity required by the muscle at the back of the neck.
Lastly, we address trigger points! Trigger points are muscles that are so tight they produce pain somewhere else when you compress them! 😖 The muscles we release here are the ➡️ upper trapezius ➡️ levator scapulae, & the ➡️ suboccipital muscles. These trigger points often refer pain to the head & produce headaches 😭. So gently massage them out like in this vid 👆 and give your head some well deserved relief.
