Dear Henry James,⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I want to begin by letting you know that most of this letter will seem ironic to me. I advocate for classics, for how we are guests into the time we go into when we read them and that they may not pass the litmus test for our current world and ideologies. Frankly, I say this quite often. I want you to know that I think this way because despite knowing this I was still left baffled by the clear misogyny in your work, Daisy Miller. I want to say this is not a condemnation on your story, you after all a product of your time. I am writing today, 140 years after your work was introduced to the world, to let you know that although I was impressed by your words I was not at all impressed by the very obvious “moral” lesson you attempted to drill into my brain. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Despite the title, we never get to hear from Daisy Miller herself. We only know her through your narrator. A narrator that deserves the title of “unreliable” since he’s also blinded by the moral and stifling restrictions of the time. I don’t think you meant this to be a satire of the world that you were living in. Of course, you know your own story but for others who may not, here goes. Daisy Miller is a wealthy young American doing a tour of Europe. During her traveling, she fumbles through with breaking European traditions due to her innocence and frankly, her ignorance. This somehow leads to a flirtation with an Italian that somehow leads to death. A bit of a stretch when I read this and frankly the connections that you made to this conclusion were as baffling as they may be to any reader that reads my concise yet direct summary of this book. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Nevertheless, I applaud your verbosity and the way you play with your words to create lyrical prose. I was beyond impressed with your method. I can understand why you have become a classic writer. I just couldn’t stomach your misogyny. I couldn’t stomach that you wrote about a character that you didn’t seem to understand yourself. To Mr. Winterbourne, our narrator, Daisy was simply a fixation so he didn’t attempt to fully fledge her to us. (Continued in the comments).

Mutlu pazarlar 🙋🏻‍♀️#okudumbitti Romanlarında özgür ruhlu kadınları işleyen Henry James’i seviyorum. Sevdim bunu. 😍 Ancak sonu için aynı şeyi söyleyemeyeceğim. Okuyup öğrenmek size kaldı. 😉 🙋🏻‍♀️#henryjames #daisymiller #iletişimyayınları #roman #okumayıseviyorum #okuoku #neokudum #okumahalleri #okumakgüzeldir #kitapokumak #okuyorum #kitapyorumu #okumasaati #okumak.

I read Daisy Miller even though I knew every plot point and twist, and heard all the themes thoroughly analyzed. Daisy Miller appears several times in Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran. Daisy is an American living in Europe who isn't convinced she needs to follow the societal rules for a young unmarried woman. Not surprisingly this is a tragedy. In Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor Daisy Miller appears over and over. Foster uses this novel to demonstrate how to analyze literature. I wanted to read Daisy Miller to see if I could draw out all the meanings Nafisi and Foster discussed. I was able to do it for the most part. It definitely made me want to read more Henry James. The truth is while reading I just wanted Elinor Dashwood from the other novel I was reading to walk onto the page and give Daisy some heartfelt guidance.

⠀
Buon sabato a tutti!

💐 “I have never allowed a gentleman to dictate to me, or to interfere with anything I do.” Our Henry James series begins tonight, including screenings of Peter Bogdanovich's underrated DAISY MILLER, in #35mm Jan 15, 17 and 19. Hewing closely to James’ novella—which had been recommended to him by Orson Welles—Bogdanovich took on the challenge of making his first costume drama/comedy of manners. His onscreen and offscreen leading lady Cybill Shepherd took on the title role of an American abroad (with mother Cloris Leachman) who conducts herself without guile or pretense and thereby risks social censure. Poster courtesy of @posteritati
Check out the full lineup for our series PICTURES OF POLITE SOCIETY, including films by Rivette, Truffaut, Campion and more, at quadcinema.com.
