On January 1 2018 Marchés d’Ottawa Markets swung open their doors in the historic ByWard Market Square building. This newly formed not-for-profit organization lead by Executive Director Jeff Darwin will manage both ByWard and Parkdale markets. Previously managed by the City of Ottawa the City has now delegated this responsibility to a Municipal Services Corporation structure. Reporting to a board of directors chaired by former Counsellor Peter Hume Darwin and his staff of 5 are dedicated to bringing additional vendors and events to keep regular and new visitors coming back to both markets. The 5-member team now consists of 3 vendor sales and support people an operations person and a marketing/communications/special events person. Darwin a former bank executive and management consultant will work with his newly formed team to build a creative and innovative retail and outdoor vending mix. The organization will also work with partners to ensure that all public space is inviting and enhanced. “Our biggest mandate is to get more people to the Byward Market and at Parkdale. There’s a ton of potential here” says Darwin. In 2017 two new enclosed stands opened and now house year-round stores which will serve as a model for bringing in other types of vendors. “There is a lot of great space available at both markets and we plan to capitalize on bringing in new and exciting vendors that appeal to a variety of visitors. Our belief is that there’s considerable opportunity for growth at both the Byward and Parkdale markets” says Darwin.
